Open world racing title DriveClub was the top selling game in October in the European PlayStation Network Store. fIFA 15 coins 200K managed to just beat the other big début from last month, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor from Warner Bros. and Monolith. The top selling game in September, Minecraft, was knocked down into third place and FIFA 15 fell to fifth place. Other new débuts include Shinji Mikami’s The Evil Within at sixth, NBA 2K15 at eleventh and Alien: Isolation at fifteenth. The bottom three spots on the top twenty, places eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth were held by the other new releases Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition, Legend of Korra and Peggle 2 respectively. Elsewhere on the chart Bungie’s Destiny experienced a sharp drop from second place to ninth place. The Infamous: Second Son DLC, First Light, also saw quite a drop from fourth place in the September sales to seventeenth place in the October chart.

DriveClub is one of Sony’s most important first-party releases this year but it suffered a troubled launch. Players found it very hard to secure a stable connection to the online servers, meaning many people who bought the game on its first day of release were unable to use the its multiplayer. For a title that is almost solely focused on racing other people over the internet, these server problems were a complete disaster. The UK-based developers were forced to continually apologise to players who were angry at not being able to use the product they had paid for. Whilst the situation has now mostly been rectified, it has damaged Sony’s reputation with consumers.

Given the massive problems with the game, it might seem strange that it managed to top the PSN sales chart. The answer lies in the price. The digital version of DriveClub which was available for download was much cheaper than the retail version sold in stores. In the UK for example, the game was priced at £50 on the high street but was available for only £35 to those who subscribed to Sony’s PSN service. As such,a lot of DriveClub’s sales were done digitally. The boxed edition, which was at sixteenth place in the UK charts last week, fell to thirtieth place this week.
